A ‘Southwark Cyclist Summit’ to discuss road safety and facilities for cyclists is set to take place next month, organised by local Liberal Democrats.
The event will bring together cyclists from across the borough for discussions and workshops on a number of bike-related topics. It will feature a closing speech by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert, who co-chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling at Westminster.
Simon Hughes MP and London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon AM are also expected to be present at the summit, which is being organised by local Liberal Democrat councillors. All local cyclists are welcome to attend.
Time: Wednesday 11 December, 6.30pm-8.30pm
Place: Beormund Community Centre, 177 Abbey Street, Bermondsey SE1 2AN
The event was already planned before the recent deaths of six cyclists in London in the past two weeks – however, safety measures to prevent further tragedies is likely to dominate discussions. A minute’s silence will also be held at the beginning of the summit to remember the 14 cyclists killed on London’s roads this year.
The summit follows up a similar successful event organised by Southwark Liberal Democrats in March 2012.
Anybody wishing to attend the summit is being asked to RSVP to Cllr Anood Al-Samerai at anood.al-samerai@southwark.gov.uk.
Commenting, Cllr Graham Neale, Southwark Liberal Democrats’ Shadow Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said:
“Everybody who cycles in Southwark will be welcome to come along and get involved. This will be a great opportunity to discuss road safety, facilities for cyclists and how we can improve the uptake of cycling in the borough.”
“This summit was planned and organised well before the recent spate of tragic cyclist deaths in London, however that has obviously made it even more timely. It is vital we get cyclists and politicians around the table to come up with a radical plan to make our roads safer.
